The Seattle Seahawks have released running back Christine Michael less than a year after signing him. Following the emergence of C.J Prosise and the imminent return of Thomas Rawls, Michael was considered surplus to requirements after an inconsistent season.Michael leads the team with six rushing touchdowns and made the only 100+ yard game to come from any of the Seahawks running backs this season. However, as a whole, Seattle rank 30th in rushing, and head coach Pete Carroll believes a change was necessary. With C.J, the versatility of all the things he seems to be able to do at this point, and knowing that theres a real style to Thomas that were really looking forward to seeing, it could be a real nice matchup, Carroll said. Well see how that works.  Rookie Goff set for start Los Angeles Rams set to give Jared Goff first start against Miami. C.J. Prosise has emerged as the Seahawks primary back, and will takeover the starting job Prosise impressed on his first start as the Seahawks beat the New England Patriots 31-24, rushing for 66 yards, as well as 87 from receiving. The release of Michael presumes that Rawls will be active for the week 11 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.  Michael was the Seahawks second round draft pick back in 2013, but struggled for playing time behind Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin. He was traded to Dallas in 2015, but could not hold down a starting position and, after time with the Washington Redskins practice squad, rejoined the Seahawks in December 2015.  Six months half price Upgrade to Sky Sports to watch Man Utd v Arsenal on Saturday and get the first six months half price With several play-off contenders looking for veteran running back quality, do not expect Michael to be a free agent for long. Despite injuries early in the year, he can still be a difference maker and will hope to be on the field sooner rather than later. Because he was contagious, Martin initially had to isolate himself for part of this month while sick. That has limited his on-field time during the teams off-season program, and he didnt practice during the voluntary organized team activity Wednesday. "I was working out here for a couple of weeks before I got sick," Martin said. "I was here from the beginning. It was important for me to be with the team and start the program. Its been fun to be around the guys and get to know everybody and learn the offence. Its been great. My teammates are great. The coach is great. So Im excited to get back at it. It kind of stunk to have mono." Martin was traded from the Dolphins to the Niners in mid-March, providing him with a new start after his departure from Miami last October. He accused teammate Richie Incognito of bullying in a scandal that overshadowed the franchises 8-8 season. Martin is aware of Incognitos apologetic posts directed to him on Twitter from March following the veteran offensive linemans earlier rant and harsh comments about Martin. Martin said again Wednesday he is thrilled to be "moving forward" and he hasnt given the situation with Incognito "a second thought." An NFL investigation determined Incognito and two other Dolphins offensive linemen engaged in persistent harassment of Martin. Incognito was then suspended and missed the final eight games. San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick said he hopes a Miami investigation from April that names him will soon be over. Earlier this month, Miami Police released two calls to a 911 dispatcher saying a woman identifying herself as Jesus was lying naked in a bed and refusing to leave. The callers said the woman wanted to spend time with a third man who wasnt there. Police say the players also involved in the case are 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton and Seahawks receiver Ricardo Lockette. None of them has been charged with any wrongdoing. "Well, the district attorney has the information today," Kaepernick said. "At this point, Im going to let them handle their business. I did nothing wrong in that incident. So, I want to do everything I can to let the DA close this matter. Im very eager to have the matter closed." Coach Jim Harbaugh reiterated Wedneesday he would like the 49ers to re-sign Kaepernick before the season starts, while also acknowledging reaching agreements on long-term commitments can be complicated.dddddddddddd Kaepernick, who took over as the starter in November 2012 from departed 2005 No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith, would enter the final season of his original rookie deal. "Again, Im hopeful. Im a big proponent of Colin Kaepernick, his abilities. On record as stating that I would like to see that happen. Its a process. I know youve heard me use that word before in many other ways. But, that is not like some of the other examples. Theres a process in place. And itll play out." Kaepernick wouldnt say what he thought would be a "fair" contract, a word he has used regarding his future with the franchise. "Im letting my agents handle all of that and Im worried about being out here trying to get better with my teammates and get ready for the season," Kaepernick said. "Im playing football regardless." And he is thrilled to get to work with his deep receiving corps featuring Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd, who hardly looks as if he just spent a year out of football. Lloyd signed to a one-year contract last month to rejoin the team that drafted him the fourth round in 2003. He caught 105 passes for 1,510 yards and 13 touchdowns for San Francisco from 2003-05. That included leading the team with 48 receptions, 733 yards receiving and five TD catches in 2005. Lloyd has also played for the Washington Redskins (2006-07), Chicago Bears (2008), Denver Broncos (2009-11), St. Louis Rams (2011) and New England Patriots (2012) during his career. "I had seen plays he had made. But, I hadnt seen him on a consistent basis," Kaepernick said. "Coming off of a year off from football, hes been amazing out here. Very smooth, very disciplined with his routes and an easy target to throw to." NOTES: New WR Stevie Johnson sat out Wednesday because "he had a little something hes working through," Harbaugh said without elaborating. ... Whether RG Alex Boone is absent because of his frustration with an unsettled contract situation, Harbaugh wouldnt say. "Ive always chosen, as a policy, not to discuss contracts publicly," he said. ... Also absent: TE Vernon Davis and RB Frank Gore, who has been a regular working out at team headquarters "The workouts are voluntary," Harbaugh said. He also had 12 touchdowns and helped the Roughriders win just their fourth Grey Cup in team history, at home in the 101st Grey Cup. In two years with Saskatchewan, the Purdue product combined for 2,875 rushing yards, 781 receiving yards, and 25 touchdowns. Aboard will be Luis Contreras, who teamed with Carroll to win not only the Plate, but the Woodbine Oaks with the filly Inglorious. Amis Holiday, a son of Harlans Holiday-Victorious Ami, has only started twice this year, finishing a good fourth to Mr. Speaker in the Grade 3 Lexington at Keeneland on April 19, before a troubled third, just a neck behind the disqualified winner and Plate rival Asserting Bear, in the Marine Stakes at Woodbine on May 25. "It was a great effort," said Carroll, about the Marine.   "But it was a disappointing race because the horse didnt get a clean trip and show what he could do.  That was a little troubling." About the Lexington, "He ran a tremendous race.  For the amount of time hed been off, I was very impressed with what he did." Last year, Amis Holiday broke his maiden at first asking and then stepped up to stakes company and promptly won the Grade 3 Grey.  That effort made him the 3-5 choice to win the rich Coronation Futurity but he endured a difficult trip, ending up fifth before being disqualified.  Since the Marine, Amis Holiday has been busy with four solid works, including a sharp five furlong breeze in 59 3/5 seconds last Sunday.   "Hes just a very nice, very easy horse to train.  He does everything you ask him to." About the Plate, Carroll, who is also the only female conditioner to ever win the race, added, "Its a big field and this horse has already had a couple of troubled trips.  He just really needs a clean trip.   Hes coming up to the race in really good order.   Hes bred to go a distance.  Everythings right about him.  Now we just have to see if things work out on the day." ONE DESTINY ON EDGE, BUT SET FOR RACE One Destiny is still touch and go to make the final field for Sundays Queens Plate, but hes been training like hes ready to run a career race. The son of Dance to Destiny is currently ranked 16th on a list of 16 horses (by purse earnings) expected to start in the 155th edition of the 1 -mile event.  If two more horses do enter, One Destiny could be on the outside looking in as a maximum of 17 are allowed in the gate for the race. Trainer Alec Fehr, who also owns a piece of the Ontario-bred with Winston Penny, knows the potential storyline. "Are we going to get in? Were kind of on the edge, arent we?" he wondered. The answer to the first question will be answered definitively on Thursday morning at the breakfast draw for the race. But on Monday, Fehr spoke assuredly about the current condition of the horse, who has one win in three 2014 starts. "Hes doing really fine," Fehr said. "He had a really nice work (on Sunday; a bullet five furlongs in :59, breezing)).dddddddddddd Hes come out of the work in good order and very sharp today. All is well." Fehr says his tactical speed will serve the horse well.  "If you look at his races, he really didnt get to run in any of his three races. Hes got any kind of speed. He can be a six-furlong horse or a mile and a quarter horse. He can be wherever in a race, but Id like to be close to the front (in the Plate)." Justin Stein, who won the 2012 Queens Plate aboard Strait of Dover, gets the call on Sunday. RHYTHM BLUES LOOKS TO ORCHESTRATE PLATE WIN NO. 3 FOR GONZALEZ Will this years edition of the Queens Plate be the same old song for two-time winning trainer Nick Gonzalez? In 2010, it was Big Red Mike who stepped up to the mike for Gonzalez and hit No. 1 on the Plate chart. Last year, it was Midnight Aria who had the veteran horseman humming a winning Queens Plate tune. This year, hes hoping Rhythm Blues will take centre stage in front of a packed house in the "Gallop for the Guineas." "My one thought all along is that he would get better the more he raced," said Gonzalez, of the chestnut son of Tale of the Cat. "His speed figures have gone up each time. I thought he ran a credible race in the Plate Trial (Rhythm Blues was fourth to We Miss Artie in the 1 1/8-mile Plate prep on June 15). He can still get better and hopefully, he is at his best on the big day." Sporting a record of one win, one second and two thirds from eight starts, the Hillsbrook Farms silk-bearer has raced at Delaware, Parx, Gulfstream Park and Keeneland, with his past two efforts coming at Woodbine. "Hes a stalker, not a speed horse," offered Gonzalez. "I dont see him being too far out of it. He isnt afraid to be in the mix, inside, outside, wherever. Weve had good fortune on two occasions to win this race. Hopefully, we can have some luck again this time." (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Heat will try to inch one step closer to a fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals Monday night when they host the Indiana Pacers for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals at American Airlines Arena. Follow all the action live on TSN2 and TSN GO beginning at 8:30pm et/5:30pm pt. The Heat, who have won the last two NBA titles and lost three years ago in the Finals, took a 2-1 series lead on Saturday night with a 99-87 win. Miami is a perfect 6-0 as the home team in the postseason. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade fueled Miamis strong third quarter and Ray Allens sharp-shooting helped hold Indiana at bay in the fourth. The Heat trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and didnt take their first lead until midway through the third, when James capped an 8-0 burst with a two-handed, fastbreak dunk for a 52-51 advantage. James and Wade combined for 22 points in the third -- the same amount as the Pacers -- to help the Heat take a 71-64 spread into the fourth. Indiana got as close as two in the final frame before Allen took over, draining all four of his 3-point tries en route to 16 points as the Heat pulled away down the stretch. "This team has proven to be resilient," Allen said of his team battling back despite trailing by double digits. "In bad situations, we pick it back up." James finished with 26 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals, while Wade added 23 points, four boards and four assists for the Heat. Allen was the only other double-digit scorer for Miami. Paul George, who suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter of Indianas 87-83 loss in Game 2, supplied 17 points and Roy Hibbert tallied 16 points for the Pacers, who had won five straight road games. David West chipped in 13 points, while Lance Stephenson tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds. Indiana took advantage of a sluggish start from Miami Saturday and stifled the Heat for much of the opening frame, forcing seven turnovers and holding the home team to 6-of-16 shooting from the floor over the first 12 minutes. The Pacers held a 21-14 lead after one and the 14 first-quarter points was a season-low for the two-time champions. With the margin at seven following a Chris Bosh triple early in the second, Luis Scola supplied back-to-back buckets to spark a 10-2 burst that Rasual Butler capped with a trey for a 37-22 cushion with 6:22 on the clock. The Heat clamped down defensively from there, holding Indiana without a field goal over the next five-plus minutes to claw their way back into the game. "We had no choice but to regather," Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said of his team falling behind by double digits. "It was good to see us bounce back in the second quarter and show some toughness." The Heat turned a four-point deficit at the start of the second half into a seven-point cushion thanks to Wade and James. Wade opened the fourth with another trey to push the spread to 10, but George scored eight points in a 10-2 Indiana burst to pull the Pacers within 76-74. Allen caught fire from there, nailing three 3-pointers in a 3:23-span to help the Heat create a 90-79 advantage. Allens fourth triple of the frame made it 97-82 with 2:50 to play and Miami cruised the rest of the way. "Its very early in the series," Indiana head coach Frank Vogel said. "They came back, they took care of their home court. We gotta try to come out and get Game 4." Game 5 will be Wednesday night in Indianapolis. Custom Columbus Blue Jackets Jerseys . Thaddeus Young scored seven of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, Evan Turner added 22 points, and the 76ers hung on for their first road win since Nov. 1, beating the depleted Los Angeles Lakers 111-104 on Sunday night. Pominville scored a goal in regulation and the game-winner in the shootout to lift Minnesota to a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. All three Wild players scored in the shootout: Zach Parise, Mikko Koivu and Pominville. "It wasnt the prettiest win, but we found a way," Pominville said. "I think thats usually the sign of a good team. We go home now and try to keep it rolling." Justin Fontaine got the tying goal midway through the second period and Josh Harding made 27 saves to improve to 9-2-2 for Minnesota, which won for the seventh time in nine games. It was the first victory for the Wild in six trips to Carolina. "We were bound to win in a shootout in one of these," Fontaine said. "The end result was what we needed. Its always a big goal when you can tie the game up." Jiri Tlusty and Ryan Murphy scored for the Hurricanes, who had won two straight. Justin Peters stopped 28 shots but allowed all three goals in the shootout. Since losing five straight, the Hurricanes have earned points in their last three games. They have two more remaining on a five-game homestand. "I think its all just coming together," Carolina ccoach Kirk Muller said.dddddddddddd"We have had a couple of good, strong games lately and we are playing well." Carolina was 0 for 3 on the power play, while Minnesota finished 0 of 4. Neither team had enjoyed any success in shootouts this season. Minnesota lost its three previous tries, including its last game at Washington. Carolinas record in the tiebreaker fell to 0-3. "We played a real solid game from start to finish," said Peters, who got his first career assist. "I just wished I could have gotten one of those shootout goals to give us a chance, but they made some real nice moves." Pominville opened the scoring 3:33 into the first period on a breakaway for his 200th NHL goal. The Hurricanes responded 1:20 later when Murphy, a second-year defenceman, took a shot from the right point that Harding couldnt stop. Tlusty made up for a pair of penalties he took in the first period by scoring his third goal of the season. He slipped a shot underneath Hardings pads as he skated through the slot at 7:14 of the second period. Fontaine tied it 4:08 later. COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ryan Miller faced plenty of good chances from the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the Vancouver Canucks goalie stopped them all.Miller made 31 saves for his second consecutive shutout, his third of the season and 32nd of his career, and the streaking Canucks topped the struggling Blue Jackets 5-0 on Friday night.Columbus couldnt muster anything against Miller, who extended his scoreless run to 152 minutes, 5 seconds. The Canucks are tied for first in the Western Conference with 33 points, propelled by a 6-1-1 run.Miller is tied for the NHL lead with 15 wins.I feel all right, Miller said. I feel like Im still building the right kind of game to play with this team. Just keep going, keep improving.Chris Higgins and Brad Richardson both had a goal and an assist for Vancouver, which played the first game of a season-high, seven-game, 12-day road trip. The Canucks balanced, four-line attack started producing late in the second period and then broke out in the third. Henrik Sedin, Shawn Matthias and Alexandre Burrows also scored, and Nick Bonino added three assists. Its harder to shut us down when everybody is scoring, rookie Vancouver coach Willie Desjardins said.Columbus has lost five in a row and has dropped to the bottom of the NHL standings with a 2-12-2 slide. Sergei Bobrovsky allowed four goals on 29 shots.Higgins found space down the left wing, patiently holding the puck before snapping a shot from below the circle, almost to the goal line and inside the near post for his fifth goal at 15:25 of the second. It just seems like we dont have enough confidence, Columbus forward Nick Foligno said. It sounds stupid but its kind of the thing I noticed the most. When we get scored on it just deflates us. Its just a mental toughness that we need to have and we just dont have it right now.Just 48 seconds into the third, Radim Vrbata threw the puck back toward to the near post where Sedin was waiting for the easy goal.It was nice, Sedin said of the play leading to his sixth goal. (Radim) waited a long time. I thought it might be too late. But nice pass, I had an empty netter. That was a big one for us.The Canucks poured it on from there, adding three more goals in just under six minutes after Miller made a nice glove save on Folignos drive from the slot.I thought they had the best chances in the first and most of the second, Desjardins said of the Blue Jackets. We were lucky. I thought Ryan Miller played real well. I thought that was the difference.Matthias took a bouncing puck, and on a breakaway snapped a shot past Bobrovsky for his fourth at 11:49.Bobrovsky was pulled for an extra skater with just over five minutes remaining, and Richardson scored right away from inside the blue line for his fourth to make it 4-0.With Bobrovsky back in the net, Burrows scored from the left circle at 17:26 for his eighth to cap the scoring.I thought in the third period we were really efficient with the puck made some nice plays, Desjardins said.NOTES: Vancouver is 14-1-2 in its last 17 games in Columbus but had lost three of four there. ...The Blue Jackets play Saturday at Nashville, which is 9-1-1 at home. ... Sure, the right guard missed his teammates, but Boone insists he will be up to speed in no time -- a fresh $6 million, two-year contract in hand to help motivate him. He agreed to terms on a restructured contract during the weekend, then passed his physical Monday. The new deal allows him to become a free agent after the 2015 season and not be designated with the franchise tag. Boone already met with coach Jim Harbaugh and said he was prepared to practice Tuesday and be ready for Sundays season opener at Dallas if called upon to start. "Its great to be back, good to be back with the team," Boone said. "Im happy with the outcome. Its a win-win for everybody. Its time to start playing football. ... Im happy to join my teammates. The feeling was very mutual. We can put all this behind us and we can move forward." Boone said he largely spent the off-season relaxing at home with his two young children, including 5-month-old daughter Karmyn. He worked out six days a week in Chandler, Arizona. If he is in shape and ready, Boones menacing 6-foot-8 presence will be welcomed. It already was a positive addition for teammates to see him Tuesday as the 49ers dressed in their new locker room at Levis Stadium amid the distractions of Ray McDonalds legal situation and linebacker Aldon Smiths nine-game suspension handed down from the NFL on Friday. "Kilgore, whats up, buddy?" Boone holllered at centre Daniel Kilgore, who was right next to him.dddddddddddd. The offensive line struggled during the preseason to protect quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Not that Boone noticed much. "I didnt really watch them that much. It was weird to watch them so I just kind of avoided it," Boone said. "Found myself working out during that time. Watched some clips, thought they were good. Could always get better, theres always progress to be made. I think for this team the skys the limit. Im excited for this year. I think everybody is. And its time to get back to work. He has started every game the past two seasons with a tight-knit unit that is one of the most-improved in the NFL. New starting centre Kilgore joins the mix this season. Boone said he hasnt hit anybody since the NFC championship game loss at Seattle. How much he might play Sunday, Boone doesnt know. "Thats up to the coaches," he said. "Personally, I think Ill be very effective." Boones fines for missing the mandatory minicamp and training camp were waived as part of the restructured contract. "Its awesome that hes here," left guard Mike Iupati said. "Im sure he worked hard in the off-season. Oh yeah, no doubt, Boonie will be ready. Everybody will be ready." Vancouver Canucks centre Ryan Kesler was doing damage control after practice on Thursday, refuting a report that hes asked for a trade. "I never commented to anyone that I wanted out," he explained. "My heart is with this group and making the playoffs." Kesler added that the rumours are "completely false" that he asked to be traded - recently or ever. "I dont want to talk about this," he continued. "I dont want this to be a distraction...Im happy to be here." While theres lots of speculation that the Canucks could be looking to move the 29-year-old centre, TVA Sports reported on Wednesday night that Kesler approached the team requesting to be dealt. Speaking to Adrian Dater of The Denver Post on Wednesday night, Keslers agent Kurt Overhardt also denied the story, calling it "a bunch of B.S." Kesler, 29, is recovering from a hand injury and did not dress on Wednesday night for Vancouvers post-Olympic opener against the St. Louis Blues. He hopes to play Friday night when the Canucks host the Minnesota Wild. He has two more years remaining on a six-year, $30 million contract, which pays him $5 million in each of the next two seasons. Hamels pitched eight strong innings and Chase Utley had a tiebreaking RBI single in the fifth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday. Hamels (5-5) got the better of Tim Hudson in a matchup between starters who have combined for seven All-Star appearances. The Philadelphia left-hander gave up six hits while striking out 10 and walking one. More noted for his changeup, Hamels has found an extra gear for his fastball over his last two starts. After using it to shut down Atlanta in a 2-1 win last Saturday, Hamels frequently featured a heater that again touched the mid-90s. "Hes really gone with his fastball to set up his other pitches," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Hes got everything behind him. Hes feeling very good; hes feeling strong." Added Hamels: "Everything was coming out the right way. I wasnt having to put as much effort into each pitch." Hudson (8-7) gave up two runs in six innings although both were unearned. The right-hander struck out six and walked two. "Youre hoping your guy gives you a chance, and thats what (Hudson) did," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "He pitched great." The Giants, who were looking for their first four-game sweep in Philadelphia since 1998, lost for just the second time in eight games. San Franciscos lead over the idle Dodgers in the NL West dropped to 1 1/2 games entering this weekends three-game series between the rivals at AT&T Park. Despite the defeat, the Giants return home feeling positive after a 5-2 road trip. "Thats a really good road trip," Bochy said. "Weve got a big series ahead of us. Its going to be a good, exciting series. Its what you play for." Utley, Marlon Byrd and Wil Nieves had a pair of hits for Philadelphia, which snapped its four-game losing streak while winning for just the second time in nine games. Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 24th save in 27 opportunities to stop a rocky stretch. Papelbon blew his third save in Tuesdays 9-6, 14-inning defeat and took the loss in Wednesdays 3-1 loss. He was booed upon entering the field and then again when he was introduced by PA announcer Dan Baker. Papelbon pitched a 1-2-3 inning to tie Goose Gossage for 21st place on the all-time save list with career save No. 310. Philadelphia slugger Ryan Howard wasnt in the lineup for the second straight day as Sandberg has decided to look elsewhere to find production from first base. Howard has been in a power drought with just one homer since June 19 and his .224 average, .377 slugging percentage and .682 on-base plus slugging mark are well off his usual production. The movee was eye-opening considering the three-time All-Star and former MVPs dominance against Hudson, against whom he has batted .dddddddddddd328 with seven homers and 17 RBIs in 67 career at-bats. Howards replacement, Darin Ruf, went 1-for-4 with a strikeout. "I wanted to see (Ruf) play for a couple of games, get him some at-bats and basically go from there," Sandberg said. "Well continue to watch." Sandberg met with Howard prior to the game, and Howard said he wanted to be in the lineup. But the manager made no promises, adding that a platoon with the right-handed hitting Ruf was possible. "If he has trouble against left-handed pitching and Darin Ruf is swinging it, that becomes an option," Sandberg said. "If (a platoon) becomes the scenario and both guys are going well, thats a good scenario." The Phillies got some help on both of their runs off of Hudson. In the first, Jimmy Rollins hit a one-out double, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Byrds single to left. San Francisco tied the game in the fifth on Ehire Adrianzas RBI single to centre. Philadelphia got some more good fortune in the bottom of the frame as Ben Revere opened the inning with a medium flyball to left. Michael Morse charged hard but couldnt come up with the grab and the error allowed Revere to reach second. Revere scored on Utleys single to centre. Hamels went at least seven innings for the 13th time in the last 15 starts and gave up three runs or less for the 11th consecutive outing. The left-hander reached double-digits in strikeouts for the fourth time this season and 27th in his career. Hamels cooled off Hunter Pence, who went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. Pence entered batting .412 with a homer and six RBIs in the series, including the game-winning double in Wednesdays 3-1 Giants victory. "I dont ever recall his fastball being as good as it was today," Hudson said. Nieves came up limping after moving awkwardly to block a fourth-inning pitch to Adam Duvall but stayed in the game. Nieves was activated Monday after spending a month on the DL with a strained right quad. NOTES: Adrianza strained his right hamstring running the bases in the fifth inning. Bochy said hell be evaluated further on Friday. ... ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Last week, Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins complained how all anyone in Buffalo wanted to focus on was the teams 14-season playoff drought.Make that 15, Sammy.Bills players young and old are dealing with the all-too-familiar frustrations of being on the outside looking in Monday, a day after extending the NFLs longest active playoff drought following a 26-24 loss at Oakland. As a player whos always been to the playoffs, whos never lost over eight games, it hurts, Watkins said. Im not used to losing. And hopefully, we fix it next year and get back on the right page.Buffalos drought is now tied as the NFLs 10th longest, and worst since the St. Louis/Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals went 15 years between playoff appearances from 1983-97.At least Watkins had a chance to crack a smile Monday. The first-round draft pick spoke while joining fellow rookies on a visit to Buffalos Womens and Childrens Hospital to deliver Christmas gifts and make holiday crafts. It hurts to lose the game, but its very important to wake up and start the day and come here and impact other peoples lives, he said. So I looked forward to just getting out of bed and not looking back on the game. Its over with. The Bills (8-7) are left playing a mean-nothing finale (for them) at AFC East rival New England (12-3) on Sunday. All thats on the line for Buffalo is an opportunity to win its first game at New England since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, and finish with a winning record for the first time since going 9-7 in 2004.The loss to the Raiders (3-12) was a stunner, and exposed many of Buffalos season-long deficiencies on offence. It just breaks your heart, quarterback Kyle Orton said. It was all there. We just didnt have the execution. And in the end, it cost us.The slow-starting offence managed just 10 points and 145 yards on its first 10 possessions. It closed by generating two touchdowns and 166 yards on its last four drives in a rally that fell short. That wasnt enough to overcome an uncharacteristically sloppy outing by a usually stingy defence. After not giving up a touchdown pass against Denvers Peyton Manning and Green Bays Aaron Rodgers in its previous two games, Buffalo allowed Raiders rookie Derek Carr to throw two. There really arent any words for how disappointed I am just with myself and the way we played in general, safety Aaron Williams said. We just let it slip away. The offence provided little help.On 13 carries, Buffalo managed 13 yards, the fourth-lowest total in team history. The ground game has sputtered all season in having managed 1,378 yards through 15 games. The Bills low for a 16-game season is 1,552 set in 2006.Coach Doug Marrone blamed the offensive line. They kicked our butt up front, Marrone said. When you do that, its difficult to run, pass and do a lot of things. The loss renewed questions regarding Marrones job security after his second season. The franchise is entering a new era under owners Terry and Kim Pegula, who purchased the team in October. The Pegulas previously expressed a desire to wait until after the season to evaluate the franchise so as not to distract the team. After beating Green Bay last week, Bills President Russ Brandon voiced his support for Marrone by saying the coach has the team on the right path. Following the loss at Oakland, Marrone insisted hes not going anywhere when asked about a report linking him to the vacancy at Michigan.I have nothing to do with that job, Marrone said. SYDNEY, Australia -- Opening day turned out to be a pretty gday for the Los Angeles Dodgers and ace Clayton Kershaw. Kershaw flashed his Cy Young form, Scott Van Slyke homered and the NL West champions opened the Major League Baseball season with a 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night at Sydney Cricket Ground. A crowd of about 40,000 watched as MLB played its first regular-season game in Australia. Kershaw, who signed a seven-year, US$215 million contract in January, allowed one run and five hits in 6 2-3 innings. Van Slyke hit a two-run homer and also doubled. The first pitch was delayed because of rain for 14 minutes. By then, the long trip Down Under had taken even longer for some Arizona players. A team bus had a flat tire, and the Diamondbacks said "a handful" of players decided to walk the last half-mile to the stadium instead of waiting for a replacement bus. Kershaw was impressive while making his fourth consecutive opening-day start. He struck out seven, walked one and was pulled by manager Don Mattingly after throwing his 102nd pitch. Quite a turnaround from spring training, when the two-time NL Cy Young winner went 0-3 with a 9.20 ERA in four starts. "Sometimes you just need the adrenaline of a regular-season game, and I just kind of feel relieved to get this one under my belt," he said. "Its always good to get results, obviously," he said. "This one counted." In his previous opening-day starts, Kershaw was 2-0 with 19 strikeouts in 19 scoreless innings. "Kershaw did a good job keeping us in the middle of the diamond," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "He threw a good ball game against us. We know theyre always going to be close." Three relievers kept the Diamondbacks scoreless with hitless work. Chris Perez, a five-time all-star with Cleveland before joining the Dodgers in the off-season, got the last out in the seventh. Brian Wilson pitched the eighth and closer Kenley Jansen got the save. Jansen walked a batter before getting Gerardo Parra to ground out to end the game. "Clayton was really good, kind of as always ... kind of doing his thing," Mattingly said. "Hes a tough guy to take out of the game, he always wants to stay in. And I thought our bullpen was really good tonight. Chris comes in and gets a big out for us there and Wilson did a good job and Jansen in closing the door." There were plenty of Dodgers and Diamondbacks uniforms in the crowd, some worn by American visitors and others by Australians who had flown across the country to watch the opener and Sundays second game, when another capacity crowd was expected. They feasted on baseball-style treats like nachos stuffed in batting helmets and Cracker Jack, which is not usually sold in Australia. If you could afford the cost and the calories, a two-foot-long hot dog soold for $36.dddddddddddd Kershaw ran like hed eaten one of those hot dogs when he tried to stretch a one-out single in the seventh into a double, but was easily thrown out at second by left fielder Mark Trumbo. "My baserunning needs some work," Kershaw said, laughing. "I almost stopped at first base and then went to second, and that hesitation probably killed me. Im not that fast, so I need all the help I can get. Fortunately, it didnt hurt us very much." Van Slyke, playing because of an injury to Matt Kemp and paternity leave to Carl Crawford, nearly cleared the left-field fence in the second inning. His double set up a grounder by Andre Ethier that scored Adrian Gonzalez with the Dodgers first run. In his next at-bat in the fourth, Van Slyke connected off losing pitcher Wade Miley for a drive over the right-field fence -- just inside the foul pole -- with Gonzalez again on base to put the Dodgers up 3-0. "I thought that it was either going to be a foul or caught," Van Slyke said. "I didnt think it had a chance to go out. I felt more relaxed and had a little more energy and focus than I did in the exhibition games." Sydney Cricket Ground was refurbished two weeks ago to create the baseball diamond and an outfield with an 8-foot wall. It was 328 feet down the foul lines and 400 feet to straightaway centre. Miley, who came out for a pinch hitter in the fifth, got the opening day assignment because of a left elbow injury to Diamondbacks ace Patrick Corbin. Miley gave up three runs and three hits, striking out eight with two walks. Both teams finished with five hits. The Diamondbacks scored in the sixth after a double by Paul Goldschmidt, who had two hits. He moved to third on Kershaws wild pitch and scored on Trumbos infield out. The Diamondbacks were shut out 5-0 in an exhibition game Friday by Team Australia when they stranded 11 runners. A series of thunderstorms but little rain around the stadium about two hours ahead of the start cut short the Dodgers batting practice and tarp was rolled on to the field. That caused the start of the game to be delayed and cancelled the pre-game ceremonies. NOTES: Dodgers SS Hanley Ramirez gingerly walked off the field early in the game and may have tweaked a troublesome hamstring. He stayed in the game. ... « on: March 21, 2018, 06:29:35 pm »
(SportsNetwork.com) - The Jacksonville Jaguars may indeed be a 2-10 football team, but to this weekends opponent - the Houston Texans - theyve got definite world-beating potential. Indeed, even though the Jaguars are fifth from the bottom of the league in both points allowed (27.4 per game) and yards allowed (383.2 per week), Texans coach Bill OBrien is preaching respect. Jacksonville comes into Week 14 after a come-from-behind defeat of the New York Giants in a game it had trailed by 18 points at halftime, and fresh off a 2013 season in which it scored a pair of victories over the Texans - then coached by Gary Kubiak - as part of a late-season three-game win streak. I dont care what (Jacksonvilles) record is, OBrien said. I really dont. Its not coach-speak. Its the truth. This team is a talented team, well- coached. Problem is, the Jaguars dont score much. In fact, theyd only exceeded 20 points twice in 11 games before the defeat of the Giants saw them rack up 22 in the final 30 minutes - including a pair of defensive touchdowns. Against Houston and MVP candidate J.J. Watt, it wont be an easy repeat. The Texans have allowed just 23 points in their last two road games, which have yielded victories over Cleveland and Tennessee. Watt had two sacks in the 45-21 dousing of the Titans to bring his total to 11 1/2 for the season, and he caught a touchdown pass - his third of the season - while lined up in a goal-line formation. One of his would-be foes on Sunday, Jacksonville right tackle Austin Pasztor, wont play after suffering a ruptured right hamstring. Watt has faced the Jaguars six times and has 5 1/2 sacks. On the mend for Houstons defense is cornerback Kareem Jackson, whos questionable with a knee injury; and rookie linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, whos played just four games thanks to illness and myriad injuries. Hes also questionable this week with a knee problem. The No. 1 overall draft pick has seven tackles and no sacks in limited action, but he maintains the full faith and confidence of the coaching staff, according to OBrien. I want to be real clear about this with him as it relates to us here and the Houston Texans, OBrien said. We think very highly of him. We know that he is going to be a really good player. He has been unlucky. He is a good kid. He is a good teammate and he is working hard to get back on the field. If he plays, hell aim for the inaugural sack against the player selected two picks after him, Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles, whos been sacked 34 times overall and seven times last week. In spite of the pressure, the win over the Giants was a watershed for Bortles, who completed his first full game with no interceptions while amassing 194 yards passing, rushing for 68 and throwing a TD pass. Bortles led an 11-play, 55-yard drive that yielded the winning field goal with 28 seconds to go. You could just see him wanting to take over the game, and his mentality, Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said. He didnt slide. When we needed a couple of extra yards, he went for it. Thats what the guys are gravitating toward - his competitiveness, his focus and his taking advantage of opportunities. His quarterback counterpart, Houstons Ryan Fitzpatrick, is also trying to keep momentum. The Harvard University product was benched for Ryan Mallett in early November, but regained the No. 1 status when Mallett was lost for the season with a torn pectoral muscle. He completed 24-of-33 passes for 358 yards and threw six touchdowns in the rout of Tennessee, six days after turning 32. Prior to losing his starting role, he had an 87.1 passer rating, 11 TD passes and eight interceptions. Maybe it helped Fitz to take a step back, OBrien said. You never want to see anybody get hurt like Mallett did, but maybe it helped Fitz to see how the offense was operated and he went in there and did a good job. The trick is, can we do it again? The Texans began the season with two straight wins, but had gone 3-6 over nine subsequent games before facing the Titans. Theyre still mathematically in the divisional title race, but can be officially excluded with a loss to Jacksonville and win by Indianapolis, which leads the AFC South. The 45 points against Tennessee were a franchise record. Running back Arian Foster had 105 yards on the ground and Fitzpatrick connected with DeAndre Hopkins nine times for 238 yards and two touchdowns - just a week after scoring a season-low 13 points against Cincinnati. It comes down to consistency, OBrien said. Its really important. Its vitally important to go out there and have a great week of practice and I think thats what we did last week. Guys were really detailed and focused. Thats what we have to do this week again. WHAT TO WATCH FOR Where Art Thou, 99? A matchup with a phenomenon like Watt would have been difficult enough if the Jaguars had Pasztor in his typical place as the starting right tackle. But with him out, the primary responsibility for contending with Watt falls to either Josh Wells, a rookie free agent; or Sam Young, a fifth-year player whos been inactive for the last six weeks. Either way, Bortles might want to work hard on quick releases this week. Make Ryan Be Ryan Though Fitzpatrick had a dominant - and mistake-free - game last week, its hardly a consensus view that the showing against a poor pass defense indicates a change from a career speckled with inconsistency. The Jaguars 37 sacks are third-best in the NFL and the defense has forced eight fumbles in two games. Another effort like that could reveal more of the true Fitzpatrick under center. OVERALL ANALYSIS Itd be easy to hear OBrien talk about how legitimate a team the Jaguars are, then consider the fact that theyre home and find enough reason to go ahead and pick them. But its not that simple. The Texans still have the best player on the field in Watt, and more ammo on offense against a team thats got few true weapons and an inconsistent rookie quarterback. A surprise is possible, but not at all likely. Sports Network predicted outcome: Texans 31, Jaguars 23 Seantrel Henderson Jersey . Minnesota defenceman Ryan Suter and centre Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings will be the alternate captains, U.S. general manager David Poile announced Friday. The 29-year-old Parise was an alternate captain at the Vancouver Olympics four years ago, scoring the goal that sent the gold-medal game into overtime. He has experience on U.S. national teams going back to 2002, and he welcomed the chance to take a leadership role in his second Olympics. "Its a special thing to be named captain of any team, but when its a national team, an Olympic team, its extra special," Parise said. "Weve got a lot of players who are great leaders. Im going to get a lot of help. Im going to need a lot of help. Its very humbling." U.S. coach Dan Bylsma said Parises work ethic and no-nonsense playing style are exemplary of the attitude he wants for his team. The Americans arent considered a gold-medal favourite, but a roster packed with NHL star power is expected to keep them in contention. "Were a team thats got a blue-collar mentality, and Zach embodies that," said Bylsma, also the coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. "Every time we play against Zach Parise, there has been a work ethic, a never-quit, a determination, an abrasiveness about a hard-to-play-against type of player. And its every time regardless of the score (or) the situationn our respective teams might be in.ddddddddddddThat is exactly how we want our team to play." Parises alternate captains have extensive leadership experience as well. Brown and Suter were both alternate captains to Jamie Langenbrunner on the U.S. team at the Vancouver Olympics. Brown is the longtime captain of the Kings and an international veteran, while Suter and Parise are both alternate captains of the Wild. Suters father, Bob, won a gold medal with the "Miracle on Ice" team in 1980. "Theres plenty of guys that wear letters with their own teams, so I dont think our team is going to be lacking in leadership at all," Parise said. "There are plenty of guys that are capable of doing that." The American team will hold its first practice in Sochi late on Feb. 10. Most players wont arrive until a few hours earlier, after the NHL begins its schedule break. Parise acknowledged the unique challenges of the Sochi Olympics, including the players adjustment to a hefty time change in just a few days before their first game against Slovakia on Feb. 13. He also recognized security concerns around the Olympics, calling it "unfortunate" that security "has dominated a lot of the conversation." "You have to put your trust in the Russian police and the security were sending over there as well," Parise said. "Were going to be in good hands. We can just relax, focus and concentrate on playing hockey." LOS ANGELES -- Cliff Lee gave the Dodgers a good lesson in what has made him a dominant pitcher: masterful control. Lee scattered four hits over eight innings, struck out 10 and retired 21 of his last 22 batters to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 7-0 victory. The 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner has 38 strikeouts and two walks through his first five starts, after leading the majors in strikeout to-walk ratio and fewest walks per nine innings during each of the previous two seasons. "Thats definitely something I take pride in," Lee said. "I really focus a lot on working ahead in the count and trying to make them earn their way on base. Ive made a conscious effort over the past few years to make that one of my priorities and its going to continue to be that way." It was the fifth time Lee has had at least 10 Ks against the Dodgers and, this time, a number of their hitters were griping about umpire Hunter Wendelstedts strike zone. "Its a good thing for me when theyre complaining about called strikes. I dont see how that can be a bad thing for me," Lee said. "I know they did complain a lot on a lot of called, and thats fine with me." Carlos Ruiz hit a two-run homer and a two-run double and Ryan Howard also went deep in the opener of a four-game series against the defending NL West champions. Lee (3-2) had at least one strikeout in every inning he pitched and did not walk a batter, giving way to Jeff Manship after 113 pitches. Left-hander Paul Maholm (0-2) gave up five runs and eight hits over five innings and committed a throwing error in the fifth that gave the Phillies an unearned run. "It was frustrating just going through a long first inning, battling, not having your stuff, and doing everything possible to get deep into the game," Maholm said. "The bullpen needed a rest and unfortunately I didnt give it to them." Maholm used 29 of his 107 pitches to get out of the first after a leadoff walk to Tony Gwynn Jr. Jimmy Rollins followed with a bloop single to right-centre. Matt Kemp slowed up on the catchable ball when he saw right fielder Yasiel Puig coming hard. Both runners scored on Ruizs double into the right field corner. "That was huge. An early lead is definitely good for the pitcher," Lee said. Puig tried to get one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, but ran into an out trying to score from second on an infield hit up the middle by Adrian Gonzalez that extended his hitting streak to 16 games. Second baseman Chase Utley fielded the ball behind the bag and looked straight at Puig, who ended up in a rundown. Catcher Ruiz took the throw and chased Puig back to third before making a lunging tag for the third out with Kemp on deck. "Thats definitely advanced. That just shows that hes one step ahead of the game and a prime example of what kind of player he is," Lee said. "Maybe he could have gotten the guy at first, but he had a pretty good idea of how Puig was going to be running the bases -- and he was dead-on. He was aggressively rounding third and he was going to go all the way home. But Chase anticipated that and got him out." The Dodgers got only one more hit over the next 6 2-3 innings -- a leadoff single in the second by Kemp, who entered 1 for 15 against Lee with nine strikeouts. Lee retired the next 20 batters before Tim Federowicz singled with two out in the eighth. The Phillies made it 5-0 with a three-run fifth. Howard hit his fifth of the season one pitch after a two-out walk to Ruiz. John Mayberry Jr. singled and scored when Maholm threw the ball over Gonzalezs head at first base after fielding a tapper to the right of the mound by Freddy Galvis. NOTES: The Dodgers dedicated their training room and named it in honour of Dr. Frank Jobe, the teams longtime physician who died March 6 at age 88. On hand for the pregame ceremony was Tommy John, whose career was extended 14 years by Jobe with the elbow ligament-replacement surgery he developed and has become commonplace in baseball. ... Tyler Toffoli and Jake Muzzin also scored and Jonathan Quick made 21 saves for the Kings, who have won three of their last four games. We need special teams in order to play like we did tonight, we need puck possession and puck management, Kopitar said. If we manage the puck up the ice it usually results in better possession in our offensive zone and we can create chances off that. We did a pretty good job of that tonight. Joe Pavelski netted San Joses lone goal and Antti Niemi stopped 26 shots in defeat. The Sharks entered the game 9-1-1 over their last 11 contests. Some of the areas where we could have been better we werent good enough, like face-offs, those types of things, Pavelski said. We had some looks there at the end to get ourselves back into it but we didnt capitalize on them. Its a special teams night; they get two and we get none. Thats probably the difference. The Kings went ahead on the power play. Marian Gaborik drove in on net and banked the puck off Niemis pad to Kopitar, who lifted a shot over Niemi from the right side of the cage for a 2-1 game 10:13 into the middle stanza.dddddddddddd. Muzzin wound up at the left circle and rifled a shot past Niemi short side on the man advantage 3:18 into the third period. Quick stopped nine shots in the third to preserve the win. The Sharks didnt wait long to get on the board. Joe Thornton stripped Justin Williams of the puck and slipped a pass to Pavelski, who skated in from the left circle and fired a shot that squeaked through the pads of Quick and over the goal line 2:39 into the game. Jamie McBain sent a pass from the right circle down to Toffoli, who beat Niemi from the left side of the net for a tie game with 5:56 left in the first. Game Notes Darryl Sutter won his 116th game as the Kings head coach, surpassing Tom Webster for sole possession of fifth overall on the franchise list ... Los Angeles has scored at least one power-play goal in five straight games and has scored two-or-more PPGs in four consecutive games for the first time since Mar. 4-11, 1993 ... BOSTON -- The Phoenix Suns needed help to snap a three-game losing streak that hurt their post-season prospects. They got it when the Boston Celtics had their worst shooting game of the season. The Suns still had to finish well and they did by scoring the last seven points for an 87-80 win Friday night that moved them one game behind Memphis for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot. "Our offence wasnt very good," Phoenix coach Jeff Hornacek said. "Defence, when you arent shooting the ball well, can win you the game and I think it did tonight." The Suns scored just 58 points in the last three quarters. But the Celtics made a season-low 30.9 per cent of their shots and missed 65. Boston coach Brad Stevens was especially upset with his teams play after Jeff Greens two free throws for the Celtics made it 80-80 with 2:02 left, the fourth tie of the fourth quarter. "We didnt play with any poise," he said. "The last 40 seconds were awful." Alex Len started the decisive spurt with a three-point play on a tip-in and a free throw with 54.1 seconds left. The Suns (37-28) finished the scoring with a dunk by Markieff Morris and a layup by Goran Dragic, who led them with 20 points. Before the season people said "we were going to have 15, 16 wins," Dragic said. "We dont care if its pretty or ugly. We need to have those wins." Eric Bledsoe had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Morris added 15 points for Phoenix. Kris Humphries led the Celtics with 11 points, 13 rebounds and one thrown towel while on the bench when they collapsed in the final minute. "Hes upset because we lost and he certainly has got a right to be," Stevens said. "That was not a good ending. It was not a good performance." Chris Johnson also scored 11 for the Celtics, but threw a bad pass that was stolen by P.J. Tucker and led to the dunk by Morris with 23.1 seconds to play. The 7-foot-1 Len put the Suns ahead to stay after entering the game in the fourth quarter when Miles Plumlee went out after being poked in the eye. The rookie centre was averaging just 2.4 points and 9.1 minutes per game before Friday but finished with six points and three rebounds in nine minutes. "Obviously, the tip was huge," Hornacek said, "but I think (with) just his size in there, he does a nice job of sliding his feet and getting in a good position, making guys shoot over him." The Celtics lost for the 10th time in 13 games while shooting worse than their previous low for the season of 32.3 per cent in a 109-85 loss to the Houston Rockets on Nov. 19. They trailed 64-60 after the third quarter, but scored the first nine points of the fourth to take a 69-64 lead on Avery Bradleys layup. Then the Suns went back in front, 70-69 with six straight points, but the Celtics pulled ahead 78-75 with 3:17 remaining before the Suns tied it on Bledsoes three-point play. The Suns led by 10 in the first quarter and by 11 when they took a 38-27 lead with 8:34 left in the second quarter. Then a layup by Rajon Rondo began a 17-6 run by the Celtics that tied the game at 44 with 59 seconds remaining in the half. Two free throws by Channing Frye with 26 seconds to go put Phoenix on top 46-44 at intermission. Both teams went cold from the field in the third quarter. Boston made 4 of 20 shots and Phoenix hit 7 of 21. But the Celtics trailed by only four after Kelly Olynyk got an offensive rebound and sank a short jumper from the left baseline at the buzzer. Their fourth-quarter finish was much worse. "We kind of got a bit antsy there at the end," Olynyk said. "I think we kind of rushed a bit." NOTES: Bradley missed his previous 13 games with a right ankle injury. ... Bledsoe played his second game after missing 33 following knee surgery. ... KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas coach Bill Self was chatting this week with someone who brought up the possibility that some unfortunate team with a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament might have to play its second game against Oklahoma State, which was once considered a Final Four contender. "I said, Just think if that happens in your conference tournament," Self responded. After winning their 10th straight regular-season title, the Jayhawks earned the top seed when the Big 12 tournament begins Wednesday night at the Sprint Center. But the reward is a first-round bye and a potential matchup with the eighth-seeded Cowboys in Thursdays quarterfinals; the two teams split their two meetings this year. Oklahoma State plays No. 9 seed Texas Tech in the first game Wednesday night. Seventh-seeded Baylor takes on No. 10 seed TCU in the nightcap of a double-header. "I think weve always had very competitive Big 12 tournaments," Self said, "but I dont know if I can ever remember where if theres a final between whatever seeds there are, it would be absolutely not a major surprise to anybody. Its going to be a pretty special weekend." The Big 12 has been the runaway leader in conference RPI all season, and some believe that it could land seven or eight teams in the NCAA tournament on Selection Sunday. Just consider the games that will be played Thursday: Along with Kansas getting Oklahoma State or Texas Tech, second-seeded Oklahoma will play the Baylor-TCU winner, No. 3 seed Texas will play No. 6 seed West Virginia, and No. 4 seed Iowa State will play No. 5 seed Kansas State. "This league," Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith said, "is by far the toughest in the country." Thats why the Jayhawks still believe they can earn a No. 1 seed to the NCAA tournament, despite their 23-8 record. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State (20-11) is teetering around the bubble, and a win over Texas Tech might be enough to push the Cowboys firmly into the dance. Knocking off the Jayhawks would certainly do the trick. "Were just trying to worry about the next game," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said, "and worrying about all that other stuff doesnt really do you any good." In that case, here are five things that fans SHOULD worry about: BUBBLE WATCH: Oklahoma State isnt the only team on the NCAA tournament bubble. Baylor (21-10) would feel much better with a win or two, while West Virginia (17-14) hopes the momentum it picked up by knocking off Kansas last weekend will propel it to enough wins in Kansas City to make a case on Selection Sunday. "I think if we won two wed be in great shape," said Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins, "but I think if we can win that first one that we would be pretty good." CHAMPIONSHIP CHALLENGE: Kansas is the only current member to have won the Big 12 tournament since 2005 -- twice since then, Missouri won the title. In fact, Oklahoma and Iowa Stare are the only current schools besides the Jayhawks and Cowboys to have won. "No matter what people say, no matter what other teams do," Oklahoma States Marcus Smart said, "it goes through Kansas." STAR WATCH: There will be stars-a-plenty at the Big 12 tournament. Andrew Wiggins of Kansas is a potential No. 1 draft pick, Iowa States Melvin Ejim is the Big 12 player of the year and Smart is also a potential lottery pick. But one player who wont be on the floor is Jayhawks centre Joel Embiid, whos been ruled out for the Big 12 tournament and unlikely for the first week of the NCAA tournament because of a stress fracture in his back. HOMECOURT ADVANTAGE: Local schools Kansas and Kansas State always pack the Sprint Center, but Iowa State also tends to draw well -- its campus is a reasonable drive from Kansas City. That means itll be tough to secure a ticket to Thursdays first session, when the Cyclones play the Wildcats and Kansas is also in action in a tantalizing double-header. LONGSHOTS: Even longshots have coaches concerned this year. Texas Tech is the No. 9 seed but has wins over Oklahoma State, Baylor and Texas on its resume. And nobody thought TCU would go winless in the league, so the No. 10 seed Horned Frogs could be primed for a first-round upset of the Bears. "Were going to do our best to keep within striking distance, like we have all year long, and give ourselves a chance down the stretch," TCU coach Trent Johnson said. Nelson added 12 assists for the Magic, who last won on the road at Chicago on Dec. 16. Victor Oladipo added 17 points, and Maurice Harkless and Tobias Harris scored 13 apiece. Thaddeus Young had 19 points for the Sixers, who lost their 12th straight overall and 11th in a row at home. Tony Wroten scored 15 points, Eric Maynor 13 and Henry Sims 10 for Philadelphia, which bought out the contract of Danny Granger earlier Wednesday. The 76ers finished 0-11 in February. Philadelphia did manage to keep the margin closer against Orlando. The Sixers entered having given up an average of 117.4 points during the losing skid, and they had been beaten by an average of 20.3 points before Wednesday. The teams began the fourth quarter tied at 67, but the Magic used an 18-8 run over the first 3:52 of the final quarter to take their largest lead to that point, 85-75, with 8:08 remaining. Nelson scored 10 of Orlandos points during the spurt, including a pair of 3-pointers. Orlandos lead grew to as many as 13 points and the Sixers never recovered. Twoo 3-pointers from Hollis Thompson to start the second half helped Philadelphia take its largest lead to that point, 50-42, 50 seconds into the third quarter.dddddddddddd But Orlando ran off 11 straight over the next 4:18 to go in front 53-50 with 6:52 left in the period. The Magics lead grew to as many as seven points, 65-58, with 3:05 left in the quarter on Harris free throws before Philadelphia closed the period by scoring nine of the final 11 points to enter the final quarter tied at 67. Philadelphia completed a buyout of the contract of Granger on Wednesday night, enabling the veteran forward to sign with any team if he clears waivers by 5 p.m. on Friday. Granger was acquired from the Indiana Pacers last Thursday for Evan Turner and Lavoy Allen but never played a minute for Philadelphia. The 76ers also received a 2015 second-round draft pick in the deal. Shanghai, China (SportsNetwork.com) - Graeme McDowell opened up with a first- round, 5-under 67 on Thursday and he holds a 2-shot lead at the WGC - HSBC Champions. McDowells last victory on the European Tour came at the Alstom Open de France earlier this year, while his latest PGA Tour win was at the 2013 RBC Heritage. Obviously the course played fairly difficult today, said McDowell. The wind direction had switched completely from practice, some of the game plan had switched a little bit and some of the holes were playing pretty long. A big key to this golf course is driving the ball well and I drove it very well today. I think I missed only one fairway, which is very important. The greens are in fantastic shape and I actually putted very well U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer, Rickie Fowler, Brandt Snedeker, Chris Kirk, Tim Clark and Tommy Fleetwood are tied for second at 3-under 69 at Sheshan International Golf Club. Lee Westwood, Louis Oosthuizen, Ian Poulter, Adam Scott, Hyung-sung Kim, Bill Haas, Jordan Spieth, JB Holmes, Henrik Stenson, Jaco Van Zyl and Dawie Van Der Walt are all deadlocked at 2-under 70. McDowell, beginning his first round on the back nine, stormed out of the gate to grab the early lead and he never let go despite a couple miscues down the stretch. The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland quickly got into red numbers with a birdie on the par-4 first. Following a pair of pars on 11 and 12, McDowell drained four birdies in a five-hole stretch from No. 13, with a par coming on 15. After making the turn at 5-under with a par on 18, McDowell kept going strong with another par on one followed by a pair of gains on two and three. At 7- under through 12 holes, McDowell finally began to slow down as he dropped his first shot on the par-4 fourth. After a trio of pars from No. 5, McDowell bogeyed his second hole at eight, dropping him back to minus-5. He finished with a par at No. 9 to end there. Seven-under par through 12 holes was a beautiful start, and alghouth I dropped a couple coming in, all in all Im very, very pleased with 5-under par on what I thought was a reasonably tricky day, McDowell said. This is as tough off the tee as I think Ive ever seen this golf course. Kaymer, also playing the back nine first, made the turn at minus-1 after making birdies on 13 and 16 to go along with a bogey on 17. Kaymers second bogey on one dropped him back to even par, but birdies on two and five had him back in red numbers. Kaymer made his third bogey on six, but a pair of birdies on seven and eight got Kaymer to minus-3. He rounded out his day with a par on No. 9. Fowler started off with two straight pars on 10 and 11 followed by another gain on 14. Fowler traded a bogey on 17 for a birdie on 18 to make the turn at minus-3. Birdies on two and eight were canceled out by bogeys on four and seven as Fowler finished his day tied for second at 3-under. Snedeker had a solid front nine with birdies on two and seven. He dropped two shots on the back nine at 12 and 15, but gains on 14, 16 and 18 were good enough to put Snedeker at minus-3 through one round. Kirk made his move up the leaderboard on his first nine with birdies on 10, 14, 16 and 18 to go along with a bogey on 17. Kirk played his final nine at even par with a gain on six and a bogey on five. Fleetwood made the turn at minus-1 following birdies on two and five along with a bogey on six. Fleetwood fell back to even par after a bogey on 10, but he finished strong with three birdies in a four-hole stretch from 13. Clark started off hot with three straight birdies from two, but bogeys on five and seven gave two of those shots back. Another birdie on nine was canceled out by a bogey on 10. Clark then made three birdies in four holes from 13. He also bogeyed 15. NOTES: Of the 80 players to tee off on Thursday, only 27 of them finished the first round under par ... Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, Its taken me a while to get up the guts to write you - when you were reffing, I didnt have very kind things to say about you. After religiously reading your column I have to admit I was quite wrong. Your knowledge of the game and the concise way you explain issues shows me you really knew what you were doing out there, officiating the most difficult game in the world to officiate. My question - the world has seen the goal scored by Phoenixs Mike Smith, where the puck went over his head, lodged on his jersey/in his pants, and then he backed into the net.  Im curious as to why the whistle was not immediately blown when this happened.  While from some angles, the puck IS visible, I would have to argue that it wasnt really playable - without potential injury to the goaltender.  A Buffalo forwards stick to his back while dangerous, would also have resulted in immediate retribuition from his teammates. Ive seen similar issues where a puck inadvertently goes in a skaters jersey or glove, and play stopped immediately.  While Im definitely not a Mike Smith fan, I think Phoenix got jobbed on that call. Whats your view? Thanks - and keep up the good work.  And my apologies for all the bad comments while you were working the game! Mark McBrideSpringfield, IL Mark: Thank you for the "courage" it might have taken you to send me this terrific question. The respect that you extended to me is the best New Years gift I could have ever hoped for. Wayne Gretzky wrote in the foreword of my book, The Final Call, "As any player does, I had a few run-ins with Kerry over those years. In fact, it was probably more than a few. I dont think he was always right, but I know I wasnt either. Players and refs often dont see things the same way in the middle of a game. But one thing Kerry always had from every player was respect."  Respect from the hockey community (players, management and fans) is the most that any Ref can hope to achieve. I thank you Mark for your offering here. The truth is I have a real problem with allowing a goal on this play once the puck became lodged and concealed in the sweater and pants of Phoenix goalkeeper Mike Smith well outside of his goal crease. Let me explain why.If we go strictly by the book, rule 85 provides some clear direction as to the Referees actions when a puck becomes unplayable or out of sight: 85.2 Puck Unplayable - When the puck becomes lodged in the netting on the outside of either goal so as to make it unplayable, or if it is "frozen" between opposing players intentionally or otherwise, the Referee shall stop the play. 85.3 Puck Out of Sight - Should a scramble take place or a player accidentally fall on the puck and the puck be out of sight of the Referee, he shall immediately blow his whistle and stop the play.dddddddddddd I can support a goal being counted when a potential save is made within the goal crease and the goalkeeper doesnt completely control or freeze the puck prior to it crossing the goal line.  Likewise, a goal should count if the uncontrolled momentum of the goalkeeper quickly carries the puck across the goal line in the act of making a save similar to when this same goalkeeper (Mike Smith) slid the puck into the net under his goal pad on a shootout goal awarded to James van Riemsdyk. This play was completely different. Phoenix goalkeeper Mike Smith was well outside of his crease when a high "jump puck" took place between Smith and teammate Martin Hanzal that resulted from an over the head rebound. Both Smith and Hanzel had their sticks raised above their heads as Hanzel batted at the airborne puck with his glove. The actions of these two players, along with their location on the ice and that of the puck, have significant bearing on what the Referee should have been focused on; namely the puck! There was potential for the puck being struck with a high-stick or possibly batted into the net by either defensive player; both of which would require a decision by the Referee. From the Refs position deep in the corner below the goal line, with his back against the wall, on the opposite side of the ice to where this series of events took place, the referee did not react to the puck dropping into the sweater and pants of Mike Smith. Worse yet there was slow, gliding movement by the referee toward the scramble in the goal crease as Smith attempted in vain to locate the puck; which the goalkeeper ultimately carried across the goal line concealed in his equipment and partially visible to the overhead camera through replay. The referee was unable to render a decision from his position as was evidenced by his lack of decisiveness and uncertainty once play finally stopped. A conference was immediately convened by the officiating crew prior to the implementation of video review. This might have been a perfect time to institute rule 31.2, intent to blow the whistle! All video review could share was that the puck was visible across the line. Now let me tell you what should have occurred on this play. The referee should have anticipated the shot and rebound that took place on the opposite side of the net to where he was standing and quickly moved along the goal line half way between the net and the side boards. From this location he would be in position to have seen the puck drop into Mike Smiths equipment and become "unplayable."  An immediate whistle would have blown in advance of the goalkeepers return to his crease and well in advance of the puck entering the net in Smiths back pocket!   All of us at TSN offer you and your family the very best wishes for a safe, healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
