Greeting Cards
« on: March 01, 2007, 06:57:04 am »
this isn't an item that I made, rather something I did with an existing item.  But since I couldnt find any reference here to anyone doing it, I thought I would tell you what I did. It's not rocket science but the members love it already

Until today I thought that the only items in my shop were the ones displayed in the shop, until I did some reading here today and discovered other items mentioned that are in the dropdown list in the shop.

One of these is Display message.

So I used the Display message item to create greeting cards!

Birthday cards
thank you cards
christmas cards
get well soon cards... well you get the idea

anyway...

since you can have bb code in the message you can jazz it up a bit. I added appropriate images, by uploading them to my server then using the bbc code to display them in the message.

Then added a little message eg Happy Birthday!

You purchase the greeting card of your choose from the shop.  Then use the 'send item to member' link to send it to someone else.

They get a PM that they have a card.  They 'use' it and get to read the card.

You can either have it set to remove the item from their inventory when used, which means it will disappear after they see it, or set it to not remove the item, in which case they get to keep the card, although this means they can in theory use it to send to someone else.

It's very simple but members are already excited about sending out birthday cards to people, and I'm sure I saw somewhere someone was looking for a birthday item.

I did this with valentines day cards, when they "used" the item, it would display a random saying.

yeah I wish I had thought of it for valentine's day but I didnt upgrade until last week :(
The images I have in the message make them look like cards :)

Yeah, I never got around to documenting the several new items in SMFShop 3.0... They've remained mostly hidden :P
