Title: Shop Ideas
Post by: Redblade on January 05, 2006, 07:48:06 am
Just a few ideas I had that could improve the shop itself:

-multiple shops: The ability to create multiple shops. This would be good in forum that makes lots of items. This will help organize them.

-trading items: Not just allowing members to being able to put stuff up for sale, but also being able to trade your item for another item.

-Giving away items: The ability to give your item away to another. May seem crazy or silly, but some people like to be generous.

That's it for now. These ideas came from me seeing other shops on different type of forums. Like the Phpbb one and the invision one.

I got more ideas, but I figured I wait and see what you think of these first.

I've already planned to add category support in SMFShop.

That was originally planned to be added at the same time as the 'Send money to someone' feature, but I didn't have the time.

Please post all your ideas at my bug tracker at http://bugs.dansoftaustralia.net/

Alright I'll do that. I'm just going to be giving you random ideas as they come. I personally won't care which ideas you pick, I'm just trying to help in generating ideas.

EDIT: Hey is it ok to suggest item scripts?  ;D

daniel i was wondering something that i asked over at SMF (username: Lostprophecy)

is it possible to have an email or PM send to either one person (myself) or all admins everytime someone buys something from the shop (i'm not talking about trade centre emails)

either that or is it possible to have a purchase log set up somewhere in admin where i can access it...

i really wouldlike this so i can keep track of what everyone is buying... having >250 members makes it hard if you can't keep a track of it

I'll see what I can do about that. It's probably just a simple code edit (I don't have access to the SMFShop code at the moment, so I'll see tonight).

Hi,
Sorry, but I might not be able to work on it at the moment. School is starting again for me next Monday, so I'll be focusing mainly on school. Unfortunately, that means I don't get much time to work on SMFShop.

Firstly i think your SMFshop is brilliant and a very good way of keeping a board interesting.

Something i think might add to it is the ability for a purchased item (i.e an image about smilie size) to be displayed on a users postings under their avatar in the forums. I have seen this done using your shop but i can't find any mention of it here and assume they did it themselves by fiddling with the code.
I have no experience in this mind boggling field and would love to hear your thoughts or guidance in doing this.

p.s the site i have seen it done is at  www.matchbox360.co.uk  (http://www.matchbox360.co.uk)      Thanks   Tazpot

Ah, I did something similar once (someone wanted something similar). It was called the "Flag" item. Basically, you buy a flag and it shows under your avatar. They used it for country flags, although I suppose it could be changed to be used for anything really. However, it has a few bugs, and is not ready for public release yet.

Here's some screenshots:

That looks like exactly what i am after, simply the ability to have items displayed so users can show off their purchases.

Obviously you are a very busy person but if you get chance then i think it would make a great addon item. O0

Thanks Daniel  keep up the good work

That would be great. 8)
And i don't mind beta testing it for you if you want as me site is very new and people are expecting the odd change whilst i fine tune and adjust it.  www.taffyshack.cjb.net (http://www.taffyshack.cjb.net)
I have started to fill the shop with stuff but most are just images that i would like to be displayed on members profiles so that they mean something and not just sitting in their inventories. O0

I've packaged the item in a standard SMF package, along with some country flags. You may download the item from this website, under the 'Downloads' section. Please tell me what you think!

It should be fixed now, please try downloading again... Sorry about that (it looks like a bug in MKPortal).
If you're still having problems, right-click the download link and choose 'Save As' ;)

Any idea how far away this idea is?

There are some big things coming with the use of the shop mod and categories would make life so very much easier.

Um, item transfers have already been coded. Multiple shops is also not that hard. I have done it; and while I don't feel like coding a way to make adding shops and stuff like that nice and easy, I could tell you how to add multiple shops the brute force way.(It takes manually editing the shop code/database, but that stuffs fun, right =P) I'll look at my code and post it up in a day or two.

The multiple shops isn't what I am concerned with...more would like to simply add categories for shop items if it is at all possible at this stage...

Pardon me for butt'n in, but aren't "multiple shops" and "categories" the same thing essentially? The "Shop" is like the whole big building? Within the building you have different departments (i.e. categories).

Daniel, I've just finished adding this very feature to the RPG package we've emailed about. If you like, I'll add the code into SMFShop and send it to you. You can determine if it's what you want to do and release it or no.

I suppose ewith that logic, then yes...but what I am looking for is rather than install an entire smfshop installation for each "category" i would rather just have a category list...something similar to the downloads section of my forum... you can look at what I am talking about by going here: http://forum.technodragon.net/index.php?action=tpmod;dl
Title: Re: Shop Ideas
Post by: Phydeaux on September 12, 2006, 06:30:54 am
:-) hmmm, how to best explain this... ummm ok, There's only one SMFShop installation. For my RPG shop which is really just 'more' of SMFShop modded up to use items from a database table without the input_needed and extra stuff, I've added categories or departments or individual shops or whatever you'd like to call them actually. When a member goes to "Buy" something, instead of seeing a list of everything avaliable like SMFShop presently shows you... The members see a list of title bars, each one containing a department name i.e. Armor, Headgear, Hands, Arms, Feet, Weapons, Magic/Spells etc. When the user clicks on one of these, the page reloads and under the selected (department) titlebar is a list of items in that department, and the other titlebars display in their order as before... still waiting to be clicked on. Items per page works like SMFShop. All categories display on a page regardless of number of items per page. etc. I wasn't going to fiddle with adding it to SMFShop simply because I don't see a need for it in our installation (too few items) but I've seen several requests for it, including yourself now. We havea couple hundred items in the RPGShop. Even wth your request though, I'd feel much better letting Daniel deal with it since I really don't feel comfy letting out a full packaged, hacked version of SMFShop. If you're interested... and can manually install the code, I'd be willing to give that to you with instructions on how/where to insert it however.

That would be perfect...can I have a link to see your shop for myself...it sounds like exactly what I have been waiting for.  And, yes, trust me I have done more that my share of manual edits to practically every aspect of my forum and all of the mods/packages that are in there.  So, yes, if you could I would appreciate that greatly to get the steps to edit to do that.

Cool... and I'll pass that link to you... as soon as I install it on our online server. I have a box set up with Apache on my home network, plus a test installation on the net. I use it to run and test all the mods and my own stuff before going live on the RoH server. Problem is... I ain't home right now. I work in the Gulf of Mexico. I don't have access to the files until I finish this hitch and get back home to East Texas. I feel sorta back having stirred up your interest and now to leave you hanging, waiting... but I hope you'll find it was worth it. Barring any complications, I should have it up here for you by Friday my time in Texas.
